A NOTE TO THOSE IMPACTED
Bethel stands in agreement with our leadership, Bishop Reginald T. Jackson, Presiding Prelate of the Second Episcopal District of the AME Church, and with pastors and leaders across our denomination. We hold this truth with you: God will prevail. This too shall pass.
We are committed to sharing clear information and practical resources for everyone affected by the 2025 government shutdown, including federal workers, contractors, and families. Please use what you find here. Share it with anyone who may need it. We will keep this page updated as new details and opportunities for support become available.
Our prayers are with you in this season of uncertainty. We are here for you. You are not alone.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
Federal Government Shutdown Resources and FAQs
As you may know, the federal government has entered a lapse in appropriations, leaving many federal employees and contractors furloughed or working without pay. Maryland has created a centralized site with resources: https://go.md.gov/FederalShutdown. Below is a summary of key supports.
1. Unemployment Insurance (UI): Furloughed workers may qualify for UI benefits. These must be repaid once back pay is received. Apply online or call 667-207-6520.
2. Housing & Utilities: Maryland law provides temporary protections against evictions, foreclosures, and utility shut-offs for furloughed workers. Contact your provider to set up payment plans.
3. Maryland Federal Shutdown Loan Program: Launching October 6, this interest-free loan offers up to $700 for excepted workers required to work without pay. Repayment is due within 45 days after the shutdown ends.
4. Social Programs: Programs like SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, and housing assistance will continue with state funding.
What You Can Do Now
1. Visit https://go.md.gov/FederalShutdown for updates.
2. Apply for unemployment if furloughed.
3. Register for Maryland’s loan program (Oct. 6 if needed).
4. Enroll in Navy Federal, USAA, or your bank’s relief program.
5. Contact landlords, mortgage servicers, and utilities early.
6. Reach out to our church if you need support—we are here to help.
We will continue to provide updates as more programs are announced.
Let us lean on God and each other during this time.
